About me

Hello! Thanks for stopping by. I hope you'll join me in my food and cooking journey.

Never did I imagine I would be writing about cooking. I grew up in an era when cooking was women's work and any guy who showed an interest in the kitchen was looked at with great suspicion. In South Africa no real man would be caught dead cooking in the kitchen, the only cooking expected of us was to toss a hunk of meat on a braai (barbecue) fire and to remember to salt it!

I was a freelance photojournalist and writer and learning to cook was the last thing on my mind. There was no need as Joy, my wife was and remains a fantastic cook.

But then circumstances changed. The global economic meltdown saw my work and income dry up and I spent increasing amounts of time at home twiddling my thumbs and spinning my wheels while Joy did the work and brought home the bacon.

I quickly felt guilty and figured despite my total lack of knowledge, I needed to help out by cooking some evening meals.

Surprisingly I enjoyed it. So this is my journey. You won't find any fancy-pantsy food here. I like comfort food. I like my belly to be full when I've eaten and I like cooking to be easy, with no faffing about.

Oh and by the way, if you're wondering what a hungry "oke" is, an "oke" is a guy or a lad in South Africa.
